On Friday, January 19, the 46th Dakar rally-raid ended in Saudi Arabia. Ukraine was represented at the marathon by navigator Dmitry Tsyro, a repeated participant in various international competitions. He competed in the marathon with Dutch racing driver Anja Van Loon.
The Dutch-Ukrainian crew managed to cover the entire distance and finish, leaving behind 16 days, a prologue and 14 stages. The length of the combat distance exceeded 4000 km. In the overall standings of group T3, the duo took 14th place.
In addition, Anja van Loun became second among the newcomers, behind Ebenezer Basson at GRallyTeam OT3. In addition, the Dutchwoman became the second female pilot after the Spanish Gutierrez Herrero, who won the Dakar 2024 in the all-terrain vehicle category. And this is the merit of our Dmitry Tsyro. Last year, Anja van Loun made their debut at the Dakar in the T3 all-terrain vehicle category. Then Dmitry was also her navigator.
The Dakar Rally route is laid out on public roads and not always by car. Stages take place daily. The distance of each stage (road sections combined with a high-speed section) is 700-900 km. The routes of the stages run through sands, barchans, and dunes. On the eve of each stage, participants receive a legend – an indicative movement diagram with the most important landmarks and checkpoints. Navigation is carried out only according to the “legend”; if GPS is used, the crew is removed from the race.
According to Dmitry, the final stage of the rally raid was a real test for the navigators. The organizers did everything to confuse the participants, force them to make the wrong choice and miss the checkpoint. But they succeeded. Congratulations on your excellent result.
