As journalists note, during his long career, Biden has not participated in the fight for immigration reform. Now he finds himself at the epicenter of events.
US President Joe Biden has agreed to tighten immigration policies to provide assistance to Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal writes about this.
An immigration deal being hammered out in the Senate would limit the ability of migrants to seek asylum at the southern border.
“The White House concession, some progressives say, shows President Biden’s leftward shift on immigration marks a turning point in his long political career,” the source said.
The publication notes that the agreement, which would come in exchange for new military aid for Ukraine and Israel, has already faced great difficulties on Capitol Hill as House Republicans put forward increasingly stringent demands.
As the WSJ reports, Biden’s concessions indicate not only his desire to provide assistance to Ukraine, but also his rating among Americans.
The publication, citing a CBS News poll, notes: 68% of citizens said they do not approve of his immigration policy, and 63% want the president to tighten it.
Throughout his 50-year political career, Biden has rarely taken on the difficult issue of immigration policy or maintained a moderate position on it.
During his presidency, the administration tried to curb the surge in migrants at the southern border. However, Republicans have taken up the issue and it is expected that a bipartisan agreement could end discussions.
The day before, the US President called for quickly providing additional funding to support Ukraine. This will send a strong signal of the United States’ determination to help its partners. On January 17, he met with congressional leaders to discuss financial assistance to Ukraine and the migration problem on the border with Mexico.
