Ten years after its launch on the market the Macan is now ready to welcome its second generation of models which this time it will be fully electric. As the first Porsche model with the new technology Premium Platform Electric (PPE), the SUV is coming to shake up the waters.
The tests for the perfect coordination of all elements and systems are correspondingly demanding. Porsche cares a lot in tests under real conditions using camouflaged prototypes. At the same time, the simulations both in virtual reality and in wind tunnel they provide more and more accurate results acquiring an increasingly important role in tests. This is even more true in trying to do it a new Porsche, not only sportier but also more efficient.
Cd value at 0.25 – aerodynamic designers and engineers in complete harmony
«When we design a new model, what comes first is driving dynamics and precision. That means Porsche. It’s in our DNA. But efficiency and design are equally important» adds o Jörg Kerner, Vice President of the Macan product line. The challenge for us was to preserve the identity of the successful Macan model range while satisfying aerodynamic requirements to ensure high efficiency and, therefore, great autonomy. It was therefore important to have close collaboration between the two team leaders during the development stages in the Design department, but also during aerodynamic testing in Porsche’s state-of-the-art wind tunnel. «Finding the golden ratio between our design philosophy and the specifications given to us by the aerodynamic engineers was definitely a challenge.” explains the Peter Varga, Director of Exterior Design in the Style Porsche department. “We work together on the smallest millimeter to achieve the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality.»
Through this team effort, Porsche managed to combine its design DNA with aerodynamics which improves autonomy. This success is not only due to the impressive lines of the model but also to the elements of technology Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) and in other specialized features. “Active aerodynamic elements together make a significant contribution to improving rangeexplains the Thomas Weigand, Director of Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics. “We have an automatically extending rear spoiler and active flaps on the front air intakes.” But also in the lower part of the body there are variable elements. The floor of the vehicle is flat and closed like the floor of a racing careven in the area of the rear axle.
The aerodynamic aids found there are flexible and guaranteed low air resistance on return – an innovative solution combined with the aerodynamic, fairly closed wheels and the aerodynamically improved contour of the tires. During normal driving on a country road, the Macan automatically adjusts its ideal aerodynamic characteristics. The rear spoiler moves to the Eco position, the airfoils close and the chassis height is lowered. In these conditions, Wiegand and his team measured drag coefficient of 0.25 (formerly 0.35). Thanks to all these features the new Macan rightly constitutes one of the most aerodynamic SUVs – with maximum impact on improving efficiency. The electric range according to WLTP can to exceed 500 km for all variants.
Fast charging with up to 270 kW – for all markets
The electric motors in the new Macan are powered by a lithium ion battery in the lower part of the body, with a gross capacity of 100 kWh, of which up to 95 kWh can be actively used. The architecture in 800 V of PPE technology in the new Macan enables high-performance fast charging that is confirmed through tests carried out worldwide as part of the vehicle development process. “Different charging standards apply in our core markets. Therefore, our prototype testing focused on these different conditions at different locations, resulting in our prototypes adapting the technology accordingly where deemed necessary. Charging must simply work, everywhere and alwayssays Kerner. The DC charging power for the new Macan at 800 Volt charging stations it reaches 270 kW. The charge level increases from 10 to 80% in less than 22 minutes at 400 Volt stations, while a high voltage switch inside the battery activates the “bank charging” function by splitting the 800 Volt battery into two batteries, each with a nominal voltage of 400 Volts. This achieves extremely efficient charging, with up to 150 kWwithout requiring an additional high voltage amplifier. AC charging is possible with up to 11 kW.
Dynamic driving tests under extreme conditions
Porsche created the new Macan with particular focus on dynamic driving characteristic of Porsche, but also to a familiar sense of vehicle control. These key features of the sports car manufacturer are central to the testing. The aim during the various stages of the tests is the coordination of the innovative elements and systems, as well as ensuring their operational stability and smooth synergy between them. During endurance tests the vehicle’s lifetime is simulated under particularly harsh operating conditions that only a few customers will encounter: those who love to push themselves to extremes. Until today, the camouflaged prototypes of the all-electric Macan they have traveled over three and a half million kilometers on test tracks and public roads.
To test the synergy of all active driving elements under extreme climatic and other conditions, prototypes are tested in every corner of the globe. «We cover every temperature range. From minus 30 degrees Celsius in Scandinavia to the 50 degrees Celsius we experienced in Death Valley in Californiaexplains the Kerner. «Of course, an SUV must be able to move on all kinds of surfaces. That’s why our tests are not only carried out on tarmac, but also off-road, on gravel, on snow and on ice.” In these cases, the all-wheel drive system of the all-electric Macan adapts accordingly, as only Porsche knows how.
Porsche uses exclusively the latest generation of PSM permanent magnet motors on the front and rear axles. With the overboost function they produce power over 450 kW, offer excellent efficiency and guarantee absolute stability in power production. The electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management system manages the distribution of over 1,000 Nm of torque with Launch Control to the top-of-the-range model almost instantly. To guarantee the perfect balance between the high performance and comfort that characterize the Macan, the engineers designed a system Porsche Active Suspension Management with two-valve technology in the shock absorbers, air suspension, transverse locking differential on the rear axle and for the first time, an active rear axle with a steering angle of up to five degrees.
