The jury of the annual North American Car of the Year (NACTOY) competition has named the 2024 winners. The fate of the applicants was decided by 50 automotive journalists from the USA and Canada.
The best passenger car was the Toyota Prius hybrid liftback, including the rechargeable hybrid Prius Prime. Its direct competitors at the last stage of the competition were the eleventh generation Honda Accord and the Lonig 6 electric sedan.
In addition to the traditional efficiency of the fifth-generation Toyota Prius, the jury for the first time noted the exterior design. The increased electric range of the plug-in hybrid version of the Prius Prime, increased to 60 km, also helped it get ahead of its competitors.
The Ford Super Duty won the Best Pickup Truck category, beating out the Chevrolet Colorado and Silverado EV. The jury noted the pickup’s ease of use, payload and towing capabilities. Partly, the fifth generation Ford Super Duty owes this to new engines.
The Kia EV9 was named the best crossover of 2024. Also vying for victory in this category were the Genesis Electrified GV70 and the Hyundai Kona/Kona EV. The jury appreciated the aesthetic “non-electric” appearance and affordable price tag among three-row electric vehicles.
Last year’s NACTOY winners included the Acura Integra, Kia EV6 and Ford F-150.
