The American division of Volkswagen shared the success of the brand’s models in the local market. The company was especially pleased with the growing demand for “hot” hatchbacks. Thus, Golf GTI sales in 2023 increased by 7.6% to 7,451 units. But the real star was the Golf R, with sales up 116% to 3,238 units.
According to Motor1, the three-pedal Golf GTI was chosen by about half of buyers, Golf R – 40%. As previously reported, the manual transmission will soon disappear from the lineup. Only DSG will remain – a preselective “robot” with two clutches and automatic gear shifting. The company announced the latest version of the Golf GTI with a manual transmission, the GTI 380, at the end of August 2023. Volkswagen also said that 2024 will be the last model year for the Golf R with a six-speed transmission.
It was the rejection of “mechanics” that became the reason for the increased demand for “hot” hatchbacks last year. In the fourth quarter, sales of the Golf GTI increased by 76.5% and Golf R by 480.1% compared to the same period in 2022.
The upcoming Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 is likely to be the final update to the ICE-era hatchback. The company has already announced that the ninth Golf will be fully electric. Production of the electric hatchback will begin in 2028. Volkswagen has promised that the GTI and R versions will continue into the zero-emissions era. In particular, the electric GTI will appear on the market in 2026.
