After the Megane, the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric takes its turn, as the spearhead for Renault’s new generation of electric cars.
Having kept only the name the same in relation to the model that wrote its own story for two and a half decades, the new Renault Scenic comes to be integrated into the Renaulution strategic plan: it is electric, modern, technologically advanced and embodies the new sustainability strategy of the French group.
Summing this up SUV in the innovative polymorphs Scenic which preceded them starting in 1996, this is the fifth generation, in which the Renault has sought to repeat the model naming pattern: “Safety Concept Embodied in a New Innovative Car(The concept of safety is built into a new innovative car). Family-friendly, able to travel in comfort, just like its predecessors, and in the spirit of the times.
Renault talks about a range that will exceed 620 km, at the same time that it includes the Scenic in its plan for carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040, and globally by 2050. It is the first most sustainably designed, all-electric family car, in which up to 24% of its materials are recycled, while 90% of its mass – including the battery – is recyclable.
Based on the CMF-EV platform, like the electric one Megane, is 10 cm longer than that, with a correspondingly longer wheelbase. Low on its floor is one of the two available batteries (60 or 87 kWh), which, thanks to their compact design, frees up completely satisfactory space for passengers and luggage.
It doesn’t take much to understand that the once-unique family car of the 1990s with its one-piece profile and highly flexible interior is definitely a thing of the past. No problem, however, as the customers are the ones who gradually turned to cars of a different philosophy, and here the electric drive is just one of the many elements that define the diversity of the new Scenic.
Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric: Goodbye versatility?
The innovative things launched by the first Scenic, in fact, no one will miss them today. Instead, the new model features everything that is now considered important. And folding tables in the back seats can be found, as well as independent cup holders or doors USB for the rear passengers (a total of 6 doors in the cabin and an inductive charging base), who, regardless of whether there are two or three, will sit with characteristic “air” for the legs and head.
The rotating supports around the cup holders act as supports for tablets and phones, and the central armrest also has an extra opening, so that Scenic to welcome along even ski boots. The top version also features a Solarbay, i.e. a glass roof that can be turned opaque, with separate front and rear LCD sections.
In terms of external appearance, the new Scenic it is based on the visual language presented by Renault in 2022, with the Scenic Vision prototype. The shape is that of a traditional one SUV, with plenty of curves combined with some sharp-looking sections. Aerodynamics was a central concern throughout the design to maximize efficiency and range.
At the front, where the grille with the ‘Nouvel’R’ logo between a series of overlapping small diamonds is most characteristic, the air curtains below the daytime running lights play their role towards this goal, which improve air intake. Accordingly, to reduce the resistance behind, in addition to the general shape, these obvious “cuts” have been provided on each side of the bumper. Based on aerodynamic efficiency, the 19 or 20-inch rims are also designed, as are the door handles.
Renault Scenic: The next day
Aimed at creating more environmentally friendly vehicles, 24% of the material mass of the Scenic E-Tech comes from recycled materials. Furthermore, when the car reaches the end of its life, 90% of its mass – including the battery – will be recyclable. The metal components (structure, body, axles, body parts, etc.) consist of an average of 37% recycled materials, while the hood and its doors consist of up to 40% recycled aluminum.
The approach inside is similar, where materials such as those on the dashboard are up to 80% recycled (polypropylene from industrial waste) or of biological origin. Epigrammatically, the cockpit consists of 26% recycled plastic, steel and other materials, the carpets are 97.65% recycled material from plastic bottles, the seat covers on the Techno and Esprit Alpine versions are made of 100% recycled fabric, while 87 % recycled fabric has been used in the seats of the Iconic version. Leather is a thing of the past and surfaces where it was traditionally found, such as the steering wheel, have been covered with a leather coated fabric.
From a mechanical point of view, the new Scenicas exclusively electric, has an electric motor on the front axle, with its basic version (170 hp) wearing a 60 battery and the largest an 87 kWhwhich ensures a nominal range of 620 km.
Having at our disposal the “biggest” Scenic E–Tech Electricwhich produces 220 hp, we drive it around Paris, on busy roads, but also on the highway, and the first thing we notice is the consumption of 16 kWh/100 km shown by the trip computer, regardless of pressure.
In the past, battery management did not allow correspondingly low numbers, much more so in cars weighing close to 2 tons, as in Scenic. However, the weight is noticeable on the road, where the Scenic has a homogeneous, but not explosive behavior, since the 300 Nm of torque cannot exceed the body’s 1,842 kg.
Its steering wheel is quite fast and provides satisfactory information, without “disturbing” the electric feeling it leaves the driver with, while the somewhat tight suspension sometimes – mainly in curled parts of the roadway – transfers unnecessary information to the interior.
With four levels of recovery, which are selected through the paddles, o driver can adjust the “virtual braking” (when releasing the right pedal) to their own preferences, with the top level coming very close to the feel of one–pedal drive, and therefore be welcome for traffic within the city. Contributing to the overall unnerving approach of the quality and bright interior with the 12.3-inch screen is the continuous indication of remaining energy with switching for city or highway driving.
Renault Scenic: Adaptation
the electric Scenic he does not come to pioneer, as his predecessor once did. His “job” is to put the brand in one of the most crowded categories, as its purely electric representative. In this context, the Renaultinstead of another futuristic shape, he has chosen to go with his… more earthy one Scenicat the same time that mechanically – and therefore in terms of performance – it has avoided impressing.
The result, which as time goes on will be seen in more and more new models, is a car that will not “frighten” the family man, who wants to switch to new technology, but not have to learn driving from scratch. .
In particular, when it comes to the version with the largest battery, the French gain points compared to several competitors in the field of autonomy, which makes the Scenic seem like a perfectly logical transition from traditional fuels. Although its course in several European countries will begin soon, its arrival in Greece seems to be planned towards the end of the year. Until then, it will be interesting to see how much the category has expanded._ Q. X.
