The film studio Lucasfilm, which gave the world the Star Wars media franchise, has filed a lawsuit against a car wash in Chile. Customers are met and served by employees dressed as Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Cassian Andor, Chewbacca and other characters from the saga.
Car wash owner Matias Jara learned about Lucasfilm’s claims while trying to register the name Star Wash with the Chilean patent authorities. The car wash’s name and branding may mislead people about the car wash’s ownership and ties to the studio, the lawsuit states.
But Hara’s lawyers argue that Lucasfilm’s copyright does not extend to car washes. Time will tell which side the court will take in this dispute. Some people find it strange that a Disney-owned film studio would even pay attention to such little things.
