At the recent international exhibition Solutrans 2023 in Lyon, Milence presented a prototype megawatt charging station (MCS) for electric trucks and buses. Milene is a joint venture between Daimler Truck, Volvo Group and TRATON GROUP, deploying Europe’s first large-scale network of public charging stations for heavy vehicles.
The Megawatt Charging Station (MCS) is being developed in collaboration with Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader that is advancing a sustainable energy future through transformation. The MCS prototype will undergo testing in the coming months with the aim of achieving 1000A charging power using ISO15118-20 communications. This will make it the fastest charging solution on the market.
The MCS station will make it possible to charge a heavy-duty truck in just 30-40 minutes, which will allow it to travel an additional 500 km. In this way, charging can be carried out during the 45-minute breaks that European truck drivers are required to take every 4-5 hours. This synchronization of “charging breaks” opens up the opportunity for transport companies to fully electrify their fleets, which will accelerate the entire industry’s transition to environmentally friendly transport.
