How to check the symbols on winter tires
“You can recognize winter tires by the special marking on the sidewall. Until now, the well-known M+S designation was sufficient as a designation for winter tires. The Snowflake Symbol (3PMSF) is mandatory for winter or all-season tires manufactured from 1 January 2018.” states Continental and adds that “in the transitional period until September 30, 2024, M+S tires will be sufficient”.
If you are wondering what exactly the abbreviation 3PMSF means, it is an English abbreviation expressing “Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake”, translated into Slovak it means three mountain (alpine) peaks with a snowflake.
You don’t have to worry about buying new tires from reputable dealers, but a problem can arise if you still have older tires that lack the Alpine symbol with a snowflake. In that case, it is definitely worth investing in a replacement and thus preparing for the end of “M+S” tires without flake from the beginning of October 2024.
