The next generation of the iconic VW Golf GTi will now officially be electric from 2026. Will it be able to keep the spirit of the petrol version alive?
From the official mouth or to be precise from his account Andreas Mindt, VW’s head of design, the news has come out about the arrival of the first electric GTi. This will do premiere in 2026probably with the name VW ID. GTi.
The photo posted by Andreas Mindt shows the first Golf GTinext to ID. GTi Concept. The caption from the head of design accompanying the photo reads “The Golf GTI was first presented at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show with a production run of 5,000 units. To date, we have sold more than 2.8 million. In 2026, we will present an electric version of this iconic model.”
Last September VW gave us an idea of the future of its fast versions, with the presentation of the ID. GTi Concept. This particular model is a preview of the hot hatch that we will see soon and will have a different philosophy from that of the original model.
But apart from the design, which may be as seen in the photos, VW did not give any information about the technical specifications of the model. Hypothetically we can expect it to make around 300bhp, like the good GTi versions of ‘today’.

Transmission will logically remain as it traditionally is to the front wheels. In addition, it is expected to be equipped with a compact battery that will give it a range of approximately 500 kilometers. As for its price, VW will try to keep it low in order to make it affordable.
