It seems like yesterday when 2 was introducedthe generation of the GLA. Undoubtedly, the external design plays its role, which looks, even today, extremely current. It combines the fundamental lines of Mercedes-Benz and a more youthful character with which the GLA won and continues to win over the public. Understandably, Mercedes-Benz did not put the “scalpel” deep into the new generation and it did well.
New is the front bumper, the grille, while we like both the ribs on the hood that remind us of more emotional models of the brand, such as the last generation SL. More essential in terms of technology, but also active safety, is the integration into the standard equipment of the LED High performance headlights, as well as the rear LED rear lights. In addition to the aesthetic upgrade, they help with night driving by offering ample and relaxing light, something we saw with our own eyes during the days we had the GLA for testing. You see, the need arose to cover 1,500 km in one weekend, so we have a very good picture of the model in general!
In our hands we had the GLA 200, i.e. the basic version with the well-known 1.33 L petrol engine which has now been electrified with the accompaniment of a mild hybrid system. So there is an extra 48 volt battery for the belt starter generator. It offers an additional 13 PS which does not count towards maximum horsepower, but helps with quick acceleration. In addition, the system allows driving under conditions with the engine off, while also increasing comfort, since the engine starts quietly and with low vibrations. Finally, it intervenes in the braking and acceleration process by recovering electricity for the integrated 12 volt network, as well as the 48 volt battery.
Modern and enriched
The previous generation GLA ushered us into a new era, where the instrument panel and the media screen form a single piece with two screens in a row. The excellent aesthetics forced many companies to follow this design philosophy, justifying Mercedes-Benz. In the renewed GLA we now find the latest generation of MBUX, while the standard equipment now includes large-correct 10.25″ screens, while in the past the basic versions had smaller screens (7″) that were lacking in substance and aesthetics. We do wish the media screen was a few points further to the right, however, as the driver’s right hand on the wheel now obscures the right edge of the screen. Finally, we’d like Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto to be standard equipment, especially since the GLA 200’s price has risen from €47,500.
Inside, the new comfortable seats covered in a combination of ANTICO artificial leather and fabric also stand out. The new steering wheel with the touch switches is also very beautiful, which in some cases, such as for adjusting the volume, do not work as efficiently as the natural ones. There is, however, a physical volume control at the base of the center console that solves the problem at once. The image at night is enhanced by the ambient lighting, which, however, from the two strips on the center console creates reflections on the side windows, but here too there is a solution, since you can reduce the intensity.
More capable than you think
In the city, you will benefit from the operation of the mild hybrid system, which offers a smooth start, but also the operation of the automatic transmission, which relieves the driver’s hands. The performance of the engine is very satisfactory, with rich torque from low revs and low noise levels, while correspondingly the consumption remains at low prices. On the countless Greek potholes we would have liked a little better damping, however the somewhat high recommended tire pressure (38psi front – 34psi rear) that we now find very often in new cars also plays its role in this.
EVALUATION (OUT OF 10)
MERCEDES-BENZ GLA 200 MHEV
ROAD BEHAVIOR 8
DRIVER SATISFACTION 8
VALUE FOR MONEY 7
However, where the GLA 200 won us over was on the open road. The way it travels is impressive. A relatively tall car with a relatively low displacement engine that can transport you quickly, with a great sense of security, as if it were a Mercedes-Benz limousine! Sturdy and safe, it wins you over with its behavior in straight lines, but also in corners where the slopes are minimal not only for a model in the SUV category but also in general.
The long gearshift keeps the engine revs low. while aerodynamic noises are also absent.
The only thing we were missing was a bigger tank so we could have a longer range than the 500 km we saw on the dashboard.
The GLA has been refreshed and is comprehensively improved. With a timeless-modern design, rich spaces, upgraded equipment and a modern engine set, it returns to the fierce battle of premium compact SUVs. Its strong paper and the way it moves on the open road swallowing the distances with unique comfort. We drove 1,500km with it over a weekend and, trust us, few cars do it as well as the GLA 200.
