The fact that Christmas time should be a “staple” time is not a view shared by all cultures and people; for some it is the ultimate party time. In the rough nights after Christmas Eve, the Perchten people get up to mischief in parts of Bavaria, some even in obscenely ugly shapes with fuzzy masks on their heads. William Shakespeare immortalized the twelfth and final night of Epiphany in his comedy “Twelth Night”, which made a global career under the title “What You Want”. And at this time it is still customary at opera houses to perform Johann Strauss’ “Fledermaus” made of champagne mood, sexism, revenge and theatrical frills. After all, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich has staged a new production of this operetta classic on the pre-Christmas Eve.
