The largest road projects that are expected to proceed in 2024 are on track, as the procedures for their implementation are progressing positively.
The biggest road projects that are predicted to proceed in 2024 are three, o Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK), the extension of Ionia Odos in the section Ioannina-Kakavia and the construction of the road axis Lamia-Karpenisi. As for him Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK), the files of the technical offers were unsealed. The first Neapolis-Agios Nikolaos section, 22 km long, has now taken the road to implementation, as a public project financed by the Recovery Fund. The Hersonissos – Naples, 22 km long, is implemented with a PPP, costing 290 million euros, with 90 million from the Recovery Fund. Next is the largest part of the project, Chania – Heraklion, 157 km long. It will be carried out with a Concession Agreement, with a budget of 1.75 billion euros.
New financial offers were submitted for the extension of the Ionian Road in the Ioannina-Kakkavia section, as the previous tender had been cancelled. The 70 km long project with a budget of 234 million euros and an option of 76 million euros (both with VAT), is a road section of the Western Axis. It will be the continuation of the Ionian Road from Ioannina to the Greek-Albanian border in the area of Kakavia, crossing the prefecture of Ioannina. This axis is considered the westernmost vertical axis of the Egnatia Road and is part of the central Trans-European Transport Network of the country. It is a project of particular importance for Epirus, Western Greece, but also Southeastern Europe, as it is going to upgrade the prospects between Greece and the countries of the Southwestern Balkans, in the fields of transport, trade, tourism and logistics. The new road axis will improve the traffic conditions of Ioannina, diverting hyperlocal loads from the Ring Road, while the connection to the Industrial Area will allow the channeling of heavy traffic to the highway network. At the same time, the project will ensure the area of Konitsa access to the Ionian Road and by extension the areas of Florina and Kastoria.
Regarding the Lamia-Karpenissi road axis, the participations were submitted for the pre-selection of its construction contractor.
His work “Road Axis Lamia – Karpenisi, section Connecting the end of the Makrakomi bypass with the eastern front of the Timfristos Tunnel» almost its entire length is followed by a new alignment and upgrades EO 38 (Lamia-Karpenisi-Agrinio). It is recalled that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has already proceeded with the tendering of the necessary geotechnical investigations in the amount of 1.8 million euros. It is noted that the budget of the highly complex, from a technical point of view, project, 35 km long, is estimated at 200 million euros (including VAT).
