The die was cast and after many months of negotiations the BYD announced that its first car production plant on European soil will be manufactured in Hungary. The Chinese giant reached an agreement with the country’s government to build a factory in the southern part, specifically in the city of Szeged. The news had leaked in early November from a German newspaperhowever, it now acquires an official character.
They will come off the production line pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars and expected investment will create thousands of new jobs. It is worth noting that BYD already has a factory in the country, in the city Komarwhere it manufactures electric and commercial buses.
BYD’s decision comes after months of courting that it accepted from other European countries among which were Germany and France. The amount of the investment was not disclosed and no details were released about the timing. At the same time, the company’s goal in Europe became known, since it wants to by 2030 to have a 10% market share.
We remind you that at the beginning of the year there were reports that wanted BYD to freeze the “car factory in Europe” project. They essentially relied on the wreckage of the negotiations for the purchase of the Ford factory in Germany but also in the market two cargo ships that can carry a total of 14,000 cars!
It can BYD cars should not be sold in Greecesince they are available only the electric professional ETP3, ETM6 and EFT, however the company operates in other European countries and in November it sold over 13,000 units, according to Dataforce researchers.
At the top of the preferences, with a difference from the second, it was the Atto 3 with 11,000 units. It is worth noting that the Atto 3 is available on Greek roads through the rental company Sixt. BYD with the new production unit will have more than 30 factories worldwide in countries such as the USA, Brazil, Japan and India.
Hungary anyway they are not “pioneers” in car manufacturing since it already hosts its units Mercedesher BMW and her Suzuki, while in 2025 BMW will inaugurate a new unit which will produce EVs which they will be based on the Neue Klasse platform.
