The development organization “New Metropolitan Attica” undertakes the study entitled “Improvement, modernization and upgrading of safety and signage for the old Athens-Corinth highway from Eleusis to Megara” on behalf of the Region of Attica.
The play “Improvement – Modernization and Upgrade of Safety and Signage of the PEOAK from Elefsina to Megara» refers to the preparation of transportation studies, for the improvement and upgrading, by sections of an existing road, as well as the study of marking and safety of the entire artery. The overall section to be studied concerns a section of the old Elefsina-Megara highway, with a total length of approximately 12.4 km. The starting point of the road section under study is the Eutaxia junction of PEOAK immediately after the Elefsina Shipyards, then it runs through the coastal zone of Loutropyrgos and Neraki, crosses Nea Peramos where it is renamed 28th of October and ends at the southern end of the city of Megara in Olympia street.
In particular, the study includes
Transportation study – Road improvement
Marking and insurance study
Hydraulic study – Rainwater
Special Architectural Study
Electromechanical study – Electric lighting
Environmental study – PPPA
The old Athens-Corinth National Highway was built before 1945 and since then, the markings and safety equipment have undergone partial improvements, additions and interventions, while its geometric characteristics and applied standard cross-sections have not been modernized. In addition, in its inner urban sections, the street is called upon to serve encroachment properties, pedestrian traffic, on-street parking and other functions for which it is not equipped while encroachment property boundaries, pillars, trees that have developed uncontrollably, walls and obstacles exert particular pressure and limit the width of the street.
The above, in combination with the traffic burden on the road due to the urbanization of the outlying areas of Neraki, Loutropyrgos and Nea Peramos, and the choice of it by a large number of drivers between Megara and Elefsina, create issues of safety and operational service, leading to a multitude of accidents.
Therefore, the need to modernize the road, to upgrade safety and security, to implement the appropriate standard urban and interurban cross-sections, to study the drainage and drainage of rain which will contribute significantly to the flood protection of the neighboring areas, as these networks are not complete , the study of lighting and every element required according to modern specifications are axes of highest priority for the Region of Attica.
