When last year in March, VW presented the ID.2all, a prototype version of the future electric Polo, it announced that it intends to add to its range an even more affordable and smaller electric model that would even have an initial price below the psychological limit of 20,000 euros. The German city car, in addition to the VW brands, would find a place in the ranges of Skoda and Seat, being the entry point to electrification by VW.
According to the latest information, there is the possibility that the above project, the development of the electric city car, will be carried out with the assistance of the Renault group, which the Germans, according to information published in the German press, allegedly approached so that, against the backdrop of Chinese pressure practiced in the European car industry recently, to jointly develop the model in question.
Based on what has seen the light of day, VW’s reasoning is, apart from the development, of course, to proceed with the joint production of the electric city car with the prospect of manufacturing 200,000-250,000 units per year.
The VW side refused to officially comment on the matter to the press, but a Renault representative confirmed the existing negotiations between the two groups, but said that at the moment “they have not reached any tangible result”.
Regarding the subject of the negotiations, it is recalled that recently Renault-Ampere, in addition to the already known Renault 5 and 4 which have already received a ticket for their arrival in 2024 and 2025 respectively, also announced the electric revival of the Twingo which in fact, according to Luca de Meo’s recommendations, it will be available at a price that will not exceed 20,000 euros, in 2026 when it is expected as a production version.
At the moment, of course, it remains unknown whether the talks between the two companies concern the development of the Twingo based on a common new architecture. What we do know about the strategy of the Renault group is that in the case of both the Renault 5 and the Renault 4, up to 70% common components with the Clio will be used in an attempt to drastically reduce its production costs, a parameter that is extremely high on the agenda of the new Ampere which has already taken over the electrification by Renault.
