It is true that Slovnaft’s success is based on fuel exports. Although it is also the operator of the network of gas stations of the same name, which is a strong player on the domestic market, export is vitally important for the refinery. At the same time, the Czech Republic needs diesel from Slovakia – we also supply 20 percent of its consumption to the country, and that is an amount that our neighbors would not be able to replace so easily.
Slovakia has already asked the EU to extend the exemption from the embargo on Russian oil. Whether that will happen is open for now. However, in the meantime, the Czech Republic is threatened with a lack of fuel, assuming that the situation would persist longer and that Slovnaft would not have enough capacity to supply the country with diesel.
For the time being, Slovnaft can only export products from Russian oil to Ukraine, and at the same time can sell them at home in Slovakia. “We will try to continue to supply our Czech customers in accordance with the sanctions,” the only Slovak refinery said in a statement.
