Road traffic accidents, which occurred throughout the country and caused the death or injury of people, decreased in September 2023 by 10.6% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.
THE Greek statistical authority (ELSTAT) announced the data of the survey on road traffic accidents for the month of September 2023. In particular, the road traffic accidents that occurred throughout the country and caused the death or injury of people, decreased by 10.6% compared to the corresponding month in 2022 (886 in September 2023, compared to 991 in September 2022). Of the victims of road traffic accidents, 54 dead, 74 seriously injured and 1,038 slightly injured were recorded, compared to 63 dead, 54 seriously injured and 1,125 slightly injured in September 2022, showing a decrease of 14.3% in dead and 7.7% in slightly injured and a 37% increase in seriously injured.
Road traffic accident (with bodily injuries) is considered the event that takes place on the streets or squares, which are free for public use (not in yards, industrial areas, depots of transport companies), with the participation of one or more vehicles, one of which at least was in motion at the time of the accident and resulted in the death or injury of a person or persons. Dead is considered the person whose death occurs at the same time or within 30 days of the accident (this definition has been followed by Greece since 1996). Injured the victim is considered a person who has suffered physical injury or damage to his health. Seriously injured the victim is considered to be a person who has suffered serious damage, such as brain injury, amputation, multiple injury, as a result of which the person either loses his mental contact with the environment or his life is seriously endangered. Slightly injured the patient is considered a person who suffered a simple physical injury, not capable of putting his life in danger.
The road traffic accident survey is carried out on a monthly basis and monitors by Region and Prefecture, for each month separately, the number of road traffic accidents by severity (fatal and/or with injuries) and the number of victims by category (drivers, passengers , pedestrians). On an annual basis, a wider analysis of accidents is made. The police and port authorities of the country are responsible for filling in the Road Traffic Accident Reports (T.O.T.A.). The lowest level of analysis of the place where a road traffic accident occurred is the settlement. The data collection frequency is monthly. The main variables are: accident location, type of road, victims, road surface conditions and type. The legislative basis for the investigation of road traffic accidents is decision 93/704 of the Council of the European Union.
