In the UK, a driving school student set his own record by failing his theory test 59 times. The high score for the final 60th attempt was a reward for his “amazing” dedication, the BBC reported.
The man, who has not been named, spent $1,743 and about 60 hours taking his theoretical driving test at a test center in Redditch. In the country as a whole, there were several such unlucky students in the first half of 2023. According to the UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), a student at a driving school in Hull failed 57 tests, in Guildford 55 and in Tunbridge Wells 53 tests. But they are all a far cry from the 28-year-old who failed his theory exam 92 times in 2012.
According to the UK Department for Transport, theory test pass rates have fallen from 65% in the 2007/08 financial year to 44% in 2022/23. The test consists of 50 questions on knowledge of traffic rules, of which 43 must be answered correctly to pass. Then there is a hazard perception test, which includes 14 video clips with various traffic situations. Each theory test costs $29 and takes about an hour.
