1. FC Köln won the basement duel in the Bundesliga against SV Darmstadt 98 and left the relegation zone at least for one night. The cathedral town team won 1-0 (0-0) in a hard-fought game on Friday evening. Former national player Davie Selke scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute. With their second win of the season in front of 17,810 spectators, Cologne moved past the Darmstadt team with the same number of points thanks to the better goal difference.
From the kick-off, both teams revealed their playful deficits. Long and high was usually the motto, which proved to be unsuitable on both sides. Even after the change it remained tough before Tim Skarke’s shot narrowly missed the FC goal. On the other side, Cologne celebrated: Darmstadt’s Mathias Honsak unluckily headed a corner from Luca Waldschmidt at the feet of Selke, who effortlessly finished from five meters.
Just six minutes later, Waldschmidt made it 2-0. But the goal was canceled after video evidence due to an offside position. A hand penalty for Darmstadt was also taken back by the video assistant. Darmstadt tried their best in the final phase, but the guests continued to have the better chances.
