Paris wants to permanently incinerate thermal cars weighing up to 1.6 tonnes as well as EVs over 2 tonnes. See how.
Paris intends to… kick them out large SUVs from the city center – and beyond – greatly increasing parking fees based on their weight. In this context, the French capital intends to carry out a referendum in all its districts in which citizens will openly express their opinion on the subject in question.
In fact, this local referendum, which is scheduled to take place on February 4, 2024will answer the question concerning the “place of SUVs in the capital”.
The aim of the makers of the city of light is to introduce higher parking fees for cars with an internal combustion engine weighing more than 1.6 tonnesand in electric vehicles over 2 tons.
In order to determine the weight of a car, the authorities will use scanners that will read its license plate, so that not only the model but also its weight is “revealed” immediately.
“We need to reduce the number and size of cars in the city, so we will put to a vote the following question: how much space should there be for this type of vehicle in Paris?”, said the city’s deputy mayor David Belliard. And he added:
«(The SUV vote) it is done to say no to everyone who continues to use their private cars because they are the richest. In a few years, in a few months, they will not be welcome in Paris with this kind of behavior!”.
According to the leaks so far, from the measure to increase the parking fees for the vehicles in question – in which they will including PHEVs with weight over 1.6 tons – cars of permanent residents are excluded.
