We haven’t seen much of the upcoming BMW 8 Series which will be refreshed this summer. In fact, this video appears to coincide with spy photos of the large coupe from May 2021. We see a green prototype with a license plate around the Nürburgring, but where the photos are silent, the video fills the airwaves with a Delectable V8 soundtrack.
In addition to the green coupe, the video also shows a white four-door Gran Coupe test vehicle that sounds just as good. It’s clear these aren’t six-cylinder models, and the drivers aren’t left out. If running past the camera while screaming the tires isn’t enough proof, the roar of the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 should be a strong point. With the exception of the very beginning of the video showing the coupe slowly heading towards an intersection outside the circuit, there isn’t a single scene where the V8 isn’t at full throttle.
That certainly means the V8 will be kept for this mid-cycle refresh. It remains to be seen whether it will hold up to 530 hp. If a significant increase in power is expected, the 340-horsepower 3.0-liter turbo I6 from the “entry-level” 840i is the better candidate. Upgrading to 380bhp would be easy enough, and it would still leave plenty of room for the M850i’s V8 to deliver another level of performance to BMW customers.
What BMW fans may be more interested in are the expected changes to the exterior. The camouflage wrap up front hides a redesigned lower fascia and slimmer headlights, but the grille appears to stay the same. In fact, it might even decrease slightly, which would be remarkable given BMW’s current design language. The updates to the rear are much more subtle, with a slight overhaul to the lower fascia, the only change we can see at the moment. The rear lights could feature new design elements.
Inside, we know there’s a bigger infotainment screen planned. BMW’s latest software will obviously power the on-board technology. Minor stylistic changes could be made by the trim options, but the overall layout shouldn’t change much, if at all.
Previews for the updated Series 8 are still sporadic, and we haven’t heard anything about a start date. As such, she will likely lose her camouflage early next year.
