Porsche is preparing us slowly but surely the switch to electric of its 718 range. Thus, during the presentation of the Mission R concept at the recent Munich Motor Show in early September 2021, allusions to the future replacement of the Cayman and the Boxster (the latter also seems to be on the program) were numerous and barely subliminal …
Style inspired by the Mission R concept
Outraged the dimensions of the concept (4.33 m) close to those of the 718 (4.38 m), this announces a one-design championship, which has always led Porsche to a production vehicle until now. Forget the aerodynamic appendages of the Mission R to focus your attention on its fluid curves, its slender silhouette… The future Cayman appears here in the background. As for its interior, unveiled quickly in Munich, it displayed a quality and above all a modernity that should be found on board the production vehicle. At Porsche, we clearly announce: “ It will be the most modern Porsche. »
An electric sports car weighing less than 1,700 kg
Electric necessarily rhymes with significant weight, the sworn enemy of sportsmanship. The more than 2 tons of the Taycan certainly does not prevent it from posting good performance, but the car is clearly not a ballerina. The fears are therefore legitimate for this future 718. However, according to some information, the car will not exceed 1,700 kg. This remains much more than the current generation (1335 kg), but acceptable, especially if Porsche takes care of the distribution of the masses. To achieve weight containment, engineers will use a shortened version of the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform and especially many composite materials.
An integral Porsche 718
This architecture will make it possible to offer rear engine versions, but also models with, in addition, an electric motor at the front. This generation would thus become the first integral 718. Unlike that of the Taycan, the transmission will only have one report here. As for the target range, the minimum acceptable for Porsche is 400 km. The powers will be announced later. As a reminder, the Mission R displays 1,088 hp cumulatively, distributed as follows: 435 hp for the front and 653 hp for the rear. We are thus far too far from the maximum 420 hp of the current model for this to give any indication of the characteristics retained in series.
This new generation of the 718 will be offered as a Cayman coupe and a Boxster roadster from 2024. The entry price should remain below that of the 911 queen, for which Porsche plans to stay true to the thermal for as long as possible.
