A few weeks before the summer vacation, Volkswagen draws its secret weapon to go on vacation with wife, children, friends and luggage without having to take public transport: the new Multivan. Capable of carrying up to 7 passengers, the model will be associated, from next year, to the ID.Buzz, its 100% electric counterpart.

A slightly less utilitarian style
If the latter will give false airs of Combi from the 1960s, the Multivan is keen to keep its own personality. Its style is less chubby than will be that of the ID.Buzz. However, it sports a mask very similar to that of the future electric model: its grille has been refined almost to the maximum, only revealing a light stream running from one lens to another. This new model has LED lights as standard and can optionally be fitted with Matrix LED technology. At the rear, the main change concerns the arrangement of the lights: they are now horizontal and stretch over the tailgate. A size evolution which gives a less utilitarian aspect to the model.
Multivan 7: available in two sizes
The Multivan comes in two sizes: one 4.97m and the other 5.17m. The wheelbase is identical in both cases at 3.12 m, indicating that it is the rear overhang of the long version which is enlarged in order to offer a larger boot volume. This extends from 469 l for the short version, to reach 3,672 l once the five rear seats have been removed, or even 4,053 l for the long version.
An interior worthy of a sedan
But it is on board that the new Multivan distances itself from its predecessor. Indeed, it has a panel worthy of a sedan from the Volkswagen range: its large touch screen (10 ”) is integrated into the dashboard and seems to be linked with the digital instrumentation (10.25 ” ). Let’s be frank, the effect is less well realized than in a Golf 8 … On the other hand, by adopting the small joystick instead of the automatic gearbox lever, the Multivan frees up a little more space between the two front passengers. What further facilitate access to the rear seats.
Standard individual seats in the rear
In the second row, the Multivan still has individual, removable seats (they weigh 25% less than on the previous generation) and swivel 180 °. The novelty is at rank 3, where the bench has disappeared, in favor, here also, of individual seats. This makes it possible, thanks to the rails running the entire length of the vehicle, to install a movable element between the seats. This element can also be used as a table.
For the first time in a plug-in hybrid
Now based on the latest generation MQB platform, the Multivan can have a plug-in hybrid engine of 218 hp, with a battery with a capacity of 13 kWh. Volkswagen, however, has not communicated on the range of the vehicle.. The range also includes two petrol of 136 and 204 hp and a diesel of 150 hp which will arrive later.
In the endowment radius, the Multivan receives the same technologies as a Golf: Travel Assist for semi-autonomous driving from 0 to 210 km / h, automatic emergency braking in town, lane departure warning, recognition traffic signs. Note that the long version has a panoramic sunroof as standard.
The new Multivan will be presented to the public at the Munich Motor Show (September 7 to 11). Its marketing will take place immediately.
