The car of the day will be the car of the year! It is indeed this Monday, in the course of the afternoon, that we will know the name of the one who will wear the prestigious badge in 2021. The announcement of the winner will be made from Geneva, even if the salon which usually serves as the setting for the ceremony does not take place.
Seven cars are in competition, including a French one, the new C4. It faces the Cupra Formentor, Fiat 500, Land Rover Defender, Skoda Octavia, Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen ID.3. The chances of victory for the Citroën are slim.
Not only because it was already a car from France that won the last time (the Peugeot 208), but because there are in the list of ultra-favorites: the Fiat 500 and Volkswagen ID .3. First advantage in common: an electric motor, necessarily in tune with the times. Second shared advantage: an affection of the jury, composed of European journalists, for Fiat and Volkswagen.
The German thus won the election in 2010 (Polo V), 2013 (Golf VII) and 2015 (Passat VIII)! The ID.3 has its chances because it is the first model of VW thought to be only electric. The brand did not hesitate to present it as the spiritual sequel to the first Beetle and the Golf.
However, Volkswagen is not the champion of this election which was born in 1964. It had a total of four titles (the fourth is the Golf III in 1992). The record holder is Fiat, with nine cars of the year! And the latest is none other than the first version of the modern 500 in 2007. Small Fiat is popular, since the Panda won in 2004, the Punto in 1995. The brand had even made a unique sequence, since the Bravo / Bravo won in 1996. The other Fiat titles are: 124 in 1967, 128 in 1970, 127 in 1972, Uno in 1984, Tipo in 1989.
Small Fiat and electric motor, the winning recipe for sure? In the betting game, the 500 is undoubtedly the model with the lowest odds. But we are not immune to a surprise.
